Warriors win a weird one

Jon Groenheyde didn’t like the south goal in Mosaic Place before the game started.

He certainly won’t have enjoyed being in it during the game either.

The Warriors scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the first period and held on for a 3-2 win over Groenheyde and the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League action Friday.

“It definitely wasn’t the prettiest win, but we got the two points and we’ll take it,” said Warriors assistant captain Brett Lyon who had a two-point night.

“At times we were all over them, we just weren’t getting enough pucks to the net. It seemed like we were out-playing and out-battling them there for a bit, but it never really showed on the scoreboard.

“We let them hang around a bit and they made a game out of it.”

Groenheyde complained about the surface in the south goal crease leading to a 70-minute delay to the start of the game.

When play resumed, the Warriors opened the scoring five minutes in on one of the most unlikely goals you will ever see.

Collin Bowman was at the top of the face-off circles in his own zone when he sent a 140-foot dump-in off the boards at centre ice. Groenheyde had his body behind the “shot” but the puck wobbled through his legs.

The lucky goal seemed to spark the Warriors who kept buzzing. They were rewarded when Sean Aschim scored his fourth goal of the season after Dylan McIlrath’s point shot came back off of the crossbar. Lyon scored his sixth of the season when he lunged to bat a rebound past Groenheyde on the power play to put the Warriors up 3-0.

A minute later Christian Magnus scored for the Broncos to stem the tide and give the visitors a little life.

Taylor Vause scored a power play goal 49 seconds into the third period to cut the Warriors lead to 3-2.

“The only problem with games like this is that it’s 3-1 and it looks like you’re taking control of the game, but you’re not scoring” said Warriors head coach Mike Stothers. “You worry that a crazy bounce or a penalty lets the team back in the game and it’s a lot closer than maybe it looked like at one point.”

Groenheyde settled down and was excellent in the final 40 minutes. For their part, the Warriors defence were strong in the final few minutes and didn’t give the Broncos many chances to tie the game.

Luke Siemens made 15 saves to pick up the win in goal for the Warriors.

The Warriors are off for the weekend and will begin a three-game Alberta road trip Wednesday in Edmonton.

Video shows Taser victim screaming in pain

HORRIFIC new video footage of a seriously injured and shackled Aboriginal Taser victim howling in agony in a prison cell while surrounded by heavily armed officers has been revealed by a corruption watchdog.

The disturbing footage shows about a dozen officers, many in full riot gear, escorting Kevin Spratt in Perth's Casuarina Prison to the infirmary, where he lay naked on a mattress on the floor of a cell wailing in pain.

At one point a nurse is heard telling Mr Spratt: "You need to lie really still, otherwise everyone's going to jump on you, OK?" She later asks Mr Spratt if he has ever broken his arm. Mr Spratt's hands and feet are chained together and at one point he is heard screaming and saying, "My hand, my hand".

The 25-minute video was filmed by a Department of Corrective Services officer on September 6, 2008. Earlier that day, Mr Spratt had been tasered 11 times by specialised prison officers at Perth Watch-House during a "cell extraction".

A week earlier, Mr Spratt had been tasered 13 times by police at the watch-house and during the week from August 31, Mr Spratt was tasered 41 times.

The footage was played by Western Australia's Corruption and Crime Commission during public hearings yesterday. The watchdog is considering releasing it publicly but has concerns about witnesses viewing the footage before they give evidence and about Mr Spratt's privacy. The day after the video was filmed, Mr Spratt was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he was diagnosed with at least one rib fracture, a collapsed lung, a dislocated shoulder and fracture of the upper arm.

"How those injuries were sustained is yet to be determined," Peter Quinlan SC, counsel assisting acting commissioner Mark Herron, said yesterday.

"The videotape . . . indicates, at the very least, that some of those injuries, and I refer in particular to the injury of Mr Spratt's arm, were suspected at an early stage."

Yesterday, the officer-in-charge of the watch-house on September 6, Sergeant Nicholas Rowe, told the CCC that there had been no indication that Mr Spratt had injuries to his arms or shoulders when he was at the lock-up.

An Emergency Support Group prison officer involved in escorting Mr Spratt to the infirmary told the CCC yesterday he did not mention Mr Spratt's injuries in his report on the incident. The officer, whose name has been suppressed, agreed Mr Spratt's injuries were discussed with nurses.

The officer told the CCC Mr Spratt did not do anything in the back of the prison van on his way to Casuarina that could have caused injuries to his upper body.

The hearings continue.

New tool for Bryant Police, armed with tasers

Police in Bryant are hitting these streets these days armed with a new tool. They've added tasers to their belts and already deployed them in two separate cases.

Tasers can often be controversial when introduced into any community. But Bryant police say, when used properly, these weapons protect officers and put dangerous suspects off the streets without permanent damage.

Dash cam video shows a March 9 Bryant Police chase. The suspect's pick-up splashes through water at one point, turning around and ramming a squad car.

"It became an assault and the suspect just wasn't going to stop," Captain Phillip Newcomb said.

Moments later, the officer pulls a taser on the victim who slips out of the truck for a brief foot chase.

"Deadly force would have been authorized but the officer had another option and he took that option," Newcomb said.

Newcomb says the officer eventually hit the man with a taser, now part of the Bryant Police patrol.

"I think it's a great tool. The officers can go home safe and that's what we want them to do, and bad guys go to jail," Newcomb said.

Newcomb says, along with that traffic stop-turned police chase, officers deployed their latest tool on an armed robbery suspect running from a McDonalds.

"I'd much rather fire a taser than a fire arm because once you let go of that bullet, you don't have no way of pulling that back," Newcomb said.

Officers seem on board as well.

"Rather than to use physical force or pepper spray which can cloud the air and not only affect the person you just sprayed but yourself," Officer Collin Kane said.

Kane hasn't used his taser yet but when he does, he'll let let caution and common sense drive the way instead.

"We aren't eager to jump on the trigger just to jump on the trigger," Kane said.

Everyone in the police department went through a two-day taser training last month, all the way up to the police chief. And they were all "tasered" in the process to see what it's like.

Newcomb adds they've had problems with officers getting injured on the job before the tasers, coming back with twisted knees, ankles and fingers.

Bill opposes age limit for breast-feeding

Despite some senators fretting about “weird things” and “strange people,” legislation to remove the current age limit for breast-feeding in public was approved by committees of the state House and Senate on Wednesday.

“Is 35 a child?” asked Sen. Bo Watson, R-Hixson. “I know that sounds crazy, but I’m thinking of a situation in a bar where maybe things got a little crazy. … I know I’m going way out on a fringe thinking a 14-year-old, but weird things happen in our society.”

Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, declaring that “at some point there should be some sort of line,” proposed an amendment to allow public breast-feeding up to age 3.

“There are a lot of strange people in this world,” Campfield said.

But Campfield’s amendment was voted down after the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Mike Faulk, R-Kingsport, said it was wrong for government to set an “arbitrary” limit on a matter that should be between a mother and her child.

“In the first place, why would a mother be charged with indecent exposure for breast-feeding a child and why would that be the business of the state?” Faulk asked. “And … who’s going to ID the child to determine if they’re 1 year or not?”

The 1-year age limit for children being breast-fed in public was set by a 2006 law. Dr. Julie Ware, a Memphis pediatrician and author of a book on breast-feeding, told the committee that Tennessee is the only state in the nation with an age limit on breast-feeding.

She conceded that the instance of a 5-year-old being breast-fed, as cited by one legislator, would be “out of the ordinary” and perhaps cause a stir, but is not really relevant.

“The intent of this bill is to focus on what is natural and normal and not what is out of the realm,” she said.

The bill — SB83 — was eventually approved 7-1 by the Senate General Welfare Committee, with Campfield abstaining.

In contrast, the measure prompted very little discussion by the House Health Committee before it was approved unanimously under sponsorship of Rep. Harry Brooks, R-Knoxville.

Jason Troxel accused of using 3-year-old son as a human shield; child Tasered

Parenting tip of the day: Your 3-year-old shouldn't be used as a human shield.

Jason Troxel's story is a sad one. If what Johnson County Sheriff's deputies say is true, Troxel used his 3-year-old son as a human shield as he ran from a residence in the 800 block of Lindenwood in Olathe on Valentine's Day. Why was he running? The deputies were serving a protection from abuse order with child removal. The whole situation went south from there.

The deputies chased Troxel, who fell to the ground with his son. When he tried to get up, a deputy fired a Taser, which mistakenly struck the child in the legs. Troxel started running again, but deputies were able to stop him and wrestle the child from him. Troxel decided to run again, but a deputy tackled him and subdued him with a Taser.

The 3-year-old was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released to his mother.

Troxel, 33, is charged with battery on a law officer, obstruction of legal process and endangering a child.

OUTCASTS Series 1 Episode 1 Review

OUTCASTS Series 1 Episode 1 - Tyger! Tyger! burning bright, In the forests of the night. What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Since Outcasts, the BBC’s new 8-part science fiction series, was described in a press release last year, many have – for better or worse – thought of it as ‘the next Battlestar Galactica‘. And the comparisons to BSG season 3 still stand up in episode 1, with a setting and cast that could easily have been on New Caprica instead of Carpathia. But I’m about to say something that almost amounts to blasphemy in my book:

I think I’m enjoying Outcasts more already.

The first episode introduces us to the main players and themes of the series without spoon feeding us the important parts. Instead, we’re left to pick through the dialogue and piece the premise of the series together ourselves. It seems that the use of nuclear weapons back on earth is what spurred the resettlement on Carpathia, a planet five years travel from earth, habitable but not entirely comfortable. There’s little water, regular sandy whiteouts, and the harsh memories of a disease which struck down the child settlers of Carpathia on their arrival.

Things aren’t exactly comfortable on a personal level, either. Mitchell Hoban, the leader of the expeditionaries (who helped find the supplies that enabled the town to thrive), wants to strike out on his own, away from the clutches of Forthaven and its rigid structure, and his fellow expeditionaries seem to be in on the plan. But President Tate has Mitchell’s own wife spy on him, leading Mitchell to kill her and abduct his son. He’s later killed and his son retrieved safe and well, but is this really the end of Mitchell Hoban?

I ask because for two reasons. Firstly, it seems a bit strange to kill off a character in the first episode before he’s actually had a chance to do anything, other than offer a hint into a possible series antagonist (the people beyond the fence, whose lives Mitchell spared). Secondly, there were multiple mentions of cloning, and if science fiction has taught me anything it’s that any mention of cloning usually becomes a massive plot point.

But, if cloning is involved, how does it tie into the mysterious disease and the aforementioned people Mitchell didn’t execute? What is this secret that Cass is hiding? And what was with Julius Berger’s Evil Smirk of Doom?

In short: episode 1 was tight, both in writing, style and casting. Every scene, however innocuous, seemed to give us necessary information for the future and moved along quickly. The look of Carpathia was beautiful, even the ramshackle Forthaven, thanks to a great colour palette and good use of lighting. The cast was brilliant, not a weak link in the bunch. (Did Liam Cunningham’s President Tate seem like astrange cross of Captain Picard and Sean Connery to anyone else?)

Even shorter: I’m diggin’ Outcasts.

Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to do some nifty bookending:

Luego de haber compartido la cena de Nochebuena, junto a sus seres queridos y pasado una Navidad reflexionando espiritualmente sus actos de humanidad y caridad durante el 2010; que le parece, mi regocijado lector, si realizamos un ejercicio de conciencia para vislumbrar los avances que para el 2011, podrían presentarse en Tabasco en materia política, pública y gubernamental: A mis lectores, primero salud y trabajo. Ojalá, al Ejecutivo no le "tiemblen las manos" para realizar los cambios necesarios en su gabinete, sancionando a aquellos funcionarios que abusaron del poder, desobedecieron sus instrucciones y se enriquecieron del erario en los cuatro años. Al fin, son buenos deseos… Ojalá, en el Deporte y la Cultura sea reestructurada sus directrices para que en estos dos años, destellen para bien de las nuevas generaciones.

Ojalá, la Obra Pública --generadora de empleos-- logre incluir al mayor número de empresarios y constructores locales para que la riqueza sea distribuida al mayor número de tabasqueños. Al fin, son buenos deseos… Ojalá, que dentro de la reestructuración humana del equipo gobernante, se oxigene el área de Planeación y Desarrollo Social, pues lleva su titular, cuatro años buscándole la cuadratura al círculo y se le fue el tiempo en elocuencia y llamaradas de petate. Al fin, son buenos deseos… Ojalá, alcaldes encabezados por Marco Leyva, Luis Deyá, Milton Lastra y Nelson Pérez, busquen acuerdos con el Ejecutivo para el fortalecimiento municipal. El éxito de una buena política de desarrollo, es el municipio. De ustedes depende.

Al fin, son buenos deseos… Ojalá, el Poder Judicial, se deje de declaracioncitas y consolide la impartición de justicia. Ojalá, el Poder Legislativo busque acuerdos de beneficios colectivos y reforme reglamento interno para restarle "súper poderes" al humildito patrón del OSF. Ojalá, los enriquecidos operadores de la imagen gubernamental (TV-Radio), difundan mejor, campañas de salud, rescate a valores humanos y prevención de delitos. Al fin, son buenos deseos… »
